SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

A visit to Sydney means the iconic Opera House is always on the cards. We were lucky enough that the Opera House became the backdrop of our holiday as our airbnb was within walking distance and it was also where we caught the ferry to explore other parts of the city.

Before I share the images of the wonderful Opera House, a quick shout out to Australian brunches. Seriously the Aussies REALLY know a thing or two about brunch and these poached eggs with avocado, asparagus, cherry tomatoes and potato hash from Joseph Hyde was a very lucky find. These guys had only been only a few weeks when we visited back in April and well, I’ll let the photos do the talking. If you’re ever in the Potts Point area of Sydney, be sure to make a stop at Jospeh Hyde at Llankelly Place – the food was absolutely delicious and the owners are super friendly.

Sydney Opera House is an amazing bit of architecture. I’m so used to seeing it on TV as part of new year celebrations, it’s definitely not a building that I had expected to see in real life. I’d never considered the fact that the roof design (or shells as they’re referred to) are made up of thousands of glazed ceramic tiles, which gives the opera house a glossy effect, rather than the matt concrete that I had expected. I loved admiring the curves of each shell, photographing the shadows cast by the building and discovering the underside of the shells which are supported by ‘concrete ribs’.

The area around Sydney Opera House is super busy and the contrast of the harbour and the city reminds me a little of Hong Kong. Except the air in Sydney is definitely a lot fresher! Walk around the corner from the Opera House and you’ll find yourself in Circular Quay. Here you’re likely to meet a huge cruise liner, drink hot chocolate at the Guylian Cafe or hop on a ferry over to Taronga zoo. I’m really pleased I got to visit the Opera House and since returning home and reflecting on my trip, it never occurred to me to walk inside the building. If I ever return to Sydney that’s definitely something I need to do!
