As a blogger, I’m always making mental notes of places with potential for blog posts and I’ve been meaning to take photos on the garden terraces at the new Library of Birmingham for a while. The terrace is always buzzing with visitors – some who are simply taking a lunch break to others who are new to the city and have heard it’s the place to be. It seems funny to me that it’s a tourist hot spot but then I remember visiting New York Library years ago and casually wandering through the reading rooms, envious of all those studying at the desks by those little lamps (but also totally singing the Ghostbusters theme tune in my head). Ok, so the two might not quite compare in scales of grandeur but the principles are the same, libraries are fascinating spaces and all kinds of people pass through them. I’ve spent a great deal of time in libraries as a kid and of course as a student (where I used to build a fort of books around me while I was working). It’s interesting to think that in the digital age we live in, libraries are obviously still very important but with library closures and cuts in funding, I do wonder what kind of spaces libraries will be in the future.
